Audio Only (19 sec./0.14 MB)

Luke: Here's a quick clip from the Medina market in Rabat. You can hear the call to prayer coming from the mosque in the distance.

Luke: Downtown Rabat -- We enjoyed Rabat; it felt quite manageable. Nizar explained that Rabat is the administrative capital of Morocco, but is far smaller than the bustling Casablanca.

Dave: By this point we were getting more comfortable with Morocco. The synagogue bombings were not so distant in the past, and as soon as we got to Rabat, a taxi driver informed us that the Americans had captured Saddam.

Luke: We spent an afternoon exploring the Medina market in Rabat.

Aaron: It was on this street that we heard our first call to prayer of the trip.

Dave: This is where Dan and I began our tape buying ritual.

Luke: Dave and Daniel sample some spices.

Daniel: This guy insisted that we needed to buy something from his store. We told him we weren't buying anything, but he insisted we go and meet his brother and check out the store. Once we got there (it wasn't close), I knew that even Scholnick--who caved and bought something off everyone and their mama--would not buy anything. It was all spices and soaps.

Luke: Obi Wan Musisi trying on a djellaba

Daniel: "Use the force, Luke" ... jedi mind tricks got Luke and me the right price on djellabas.

Dave: Daniel looks damn cool right here, and I hear the co-eds at American are beside themselves when he sports the djellaba. While they tried on every garment in the joint, I explored the surrounding stalls.

Luke: These merchants served us Moroccan tea as we discussed the purchase of djellabas.

Aaron: After the tea steeped, they poured it into glasses with the pot held at a great height, then served it on a silver platter.

Daniel: The tea is very bitter/strong, and very sweet at the same time. Very similar to the tea in Senegal.

Luke: You can see the edge of an ancient Roman ruin perched over this lush valley in Rabat.

Dave: Dan, Aaron and I took a tour around the Roman ruin, but I can't remember a damn thing the guy told us.

Luke: More of the Roman ruin

Luke: We met Sophia (right) on the plane to Morocco. She invited us to join her and her sister for dinner at a restaurant in her town, Mohammadia (about halfway between Casablanca and Rabat).

Aaron: We were several hours late for dinner, but they said they didn't mind.
