| Luke: At the 2:00 PM prayer time on Ajjuma (Friday), people line the streets throughout Dakar. The Friday prayer that we later witnessed in Bamako was even more dramatic; literally all other activity ceased as the streets filled with so many people that we actually had difficulty finding a corner to discreetly duck into. | |||
| Luke: A 'car rapide', the most common form of transportation in Dakar, along with the innumerable taxis. A ride in a 'car rapide' is very cheap (a ride across the city costs 50 CFA, or about ten cents) and it provides an interesting, authentic experience, but these cars are definitely not rapid. | |||
| Luke: Here's a familiar view from the apartment Lynn and I lived in in 1999. The makeshift soccer field hosts some spirited competitions; the Senegalese are great soccer players. | |||
| Luke: We visited the Ndiaye family (including Doro, left, and Fatou, right). Lynn and I had lived in an apartment adjoining their compound. It was fun to see everyone again after so long. | |||
| Luke: Fatou Ndiaye! | |||
| Luke: Fatou loved Daniel's video camera. | |||
| Luke: Taking pictures with a toy camera | |||
Luke: While the rest of us played with the children, Aaron opted for a more sophisticated conversation with Doro. Aaron: Doro says I'm too old to still be single. |
|||
| Luke: Fatou had everyone making faces. | |||
