We got up bright and early this morning, and we were the first to arrive at the Réserve de Bandia, just an hour outside of Dakar. This meant that we got the first crack at the animals, who had not been disturbed since the previous day. Here, Diane, Laura, and Michelle settle into the back seat of our rented 4x4.

The giraffes were magnificent!

The giraffes feed on the leaves and flowers of the Senegalese mimosa tree. Once the giraffes have removed a certain portion of the leaves and flowers, the tree begins to excrete a poison. The poison recedes once the tree has regenerated sufficiently, and the giraffes may return for more.

I have a small piece of advice: don't try to drive back into Dakar on a Saturday at noon. This picture was taken farther from Dakar, but the traffic became extremely heavy as we approached the city, and we ended up spending a lot of time breathing in thick diesel fumes while sitting in stand-still traffic.

Binta, who manages the auberge where we stayed in Dakar, promised to hang this picture of Michelle's cat with her photos of other travelers who have passed through.
