Luke: The covered market in Kaolack is reputed to be the second largest in Africa (after Marrakech).

Dave: A lot of places we went, there were people who wanted to be our guide. They didn't ask for money, but definitely expected a little something. In Kaolack, Mamadou (see below) showed us around the market, but this guy (on the left) just hung around behing us, just in case we needed two guides.

Luke: There are endless varieties of beautiful fabric available in Senegal.

Luke: This friendly little guy was begging in the market. He hung out with us for a little while. We hooked him up.

Dave: This was in the courtyard in the center of the market. We ran into him again just a bit later.

Luke: Studying the Qur'an

Dave: I was told that they were studying with marabouts (religious teachers). If you ask a typical Senegalese kid what he's studying in school, he'll mention French and Arabic among the first three subjects.

Luke: Arriving at the strangely empty hotel felt like stepping back into the French colonial period. The building was constructed in the '50s and has had very little maintenance done since. Our driver joined us for dinner in the restaurant, which was staffed by one guy (in the background) and in which we were the only customers.
